Abstract

Genetic progress in dairy cattle is essential for improving productivity and sustainability in intensive production systems. This study aimed to assess changes in estimated breeding values for milk production (PTH), repeatability, genetic variability, and Gaussian distribution of sires used in a Holstein herd located in Vítor, Arequipa, Peru, from 2019 to 2025. Records from 311 animals in production and rearing, along with sire genetic merits from artificial insemination, were analyzed. Results show a positive genetic trend toward 2025, with increased average PTH (from 844 in 2019 to 1078 in 2025), reduced genetic variation, and a higher proportion of sires above the herd mean. Distribution analyses allowed identification of sires categorized as low, medium, and high genetic merit annually. We conclude that well-directed genetic selection supported by reliable records and annual evaluation is a key tool to improve the productivity of a Holstein herd under specific agroecological conditions in the Vítor valley.
